So it seems that straight glasses prompt drinkers to take more time finishing their beverages, taking more sips and longer pauses between sips. This study is not yet conclusive whether all bar owners should start stocking on straight side glasses, yet it does provide significant evidence. Another fact showed by this research is that people DO have difficulties in estimating how much alcohol they actually drink, and this is a very serious matter with consequences often shown during the six o’clock news.

The creation of customized and decorative glassware takes place with products that are specifically designed to adhere to a glass surface. Glass is non-porous and slick so getting paint or ink to stay on its surface can be quite challenging without the right materials. The surface, also called the substrate, and the ink series have to match because their chemical compatibility is critical for a durable and a quality printing.

The most common glassware printing methods are: screen printing and pad printing.

Screen printing is a very durable and affordable method. Usually this is the most preferred method of printing offering both quality and a high degree of production versatility which in the end results in a faster delivery. In this type of printing the paint is transferred to the material by squeezing it into a fine screen mesh which retains the design pattern. Then the wet paint has to be cooked in order to finish the process. Depending on the type of paint and the type of glass that it is printed as well as the complexity of the design pattern some products do not require oven cooking, the paint will simply dry if left in a low humidity area.

In the screen printing method the first step is to create the screen. The design is imposed a screen of fine mesh (e.g. silk). The screen has black areas coated with an impermeable substance and the ink will be forced through the mesh into the surface that is being printed. After this process if completed the screen is installed into the machine, on top of the area where each of the objects will be placed in order to be printed.

Screen printing cycle:

-  The object is set in place. The object is placed bellow the screen, onto a specific slot that will allow it to be rolled in order that the entire round area, specific to glassware, will be covered. In automated systems the object is automatically place in the slot. The slot has rubber edges to guarantee a firm grip.

-  The bed containing the screen and the ink on top of it is slid left for a thorough printing. As the bed begins sliding, be it by hand or by a machine on an automated process, the glassware is printed.

-  The object is left aside for drying or placed in an oven.

Another printing method usually employed by manufactures is the Pad Printing method. This method provides a better quality compared to screen printing, but is also a bit more expensive and involves higher level of labor and a higher level of equipment. It is also limited to fewer objects providing the fact that it uses a pad in order to translate the design pattern onto the objects. This process involves a prating area that is more strict but on the other hand more efficient. Compared to screen printing that allow the printing of the entire area of the glass, the pad printing is limited to just a fraction of it.

In order to start the pad printing, a plate has to be embedded with a design. Then that plate has to be installed on into a machine. After that a bed tray has to be then filled with ink.

Pad Printing Cycle:

-    Loading the glassware
-    Sliding the bed to the left
-    Bringing the pad to the printing plate to pick up the ink
-    Sliding the bed back to the glassware
-    Then transferring the image

Both printing methods are used specifically for certain printing areas and designs. When a customer demands a product that is uniformly printed with detailed, complex and colorful patterns then we use screen printing.  On the hand when the customer demands a product that has a significant logo or a small quote or some design that is smaller and only has to be printed on a specific area of glassware, in that case we use pad printing, because it is more efficient and produces better results.

Once you have the desired kind of wax, place a wick in the empty glass and then carefully pour melted wax to turn your shot glass into a cute candle.

Tic-Tac-Toe Shot Glass Drinking Game

What can be more simple yet fun than a drinking version of tic-tac-toe game? This is played like a regular tic-tac-toe game, only with shot glasses bearing the X and 0 symbols, and with a more than appealing punishment: the loser has to drink all the shot glasses on the board. To use your glasses as instruments for this fun childhood game, get a square plaque, draw two evenly spaced horizontal lines that will intersect with another couple of evenly spaced vertical lines and decorate your glasses with X and 0 symbols. You can glue paper cut in the shape of X and 0 or use a marker to draw them on the surface of the glass. Let the game begin!

The main ingredient in making glass is silica sand. When you heat it along with other chemicals it turns into a syrupy liquid that you can then mold or blow into a particular shape. Add lead oxide and you have lead crystal. This is much softer than regular glass, making it easier to cut with intricate designs.

To begin the process of making glasses a craftsman starts with silica sand, which is a very pure type of sand. Then they add nickel oxide to help the silica sand melt, lead oxide, potassium carbonate, potassium nitrate and antimony to give the finished crystal its smoothness, heft and sparkle. They then compress the mix into pallets. They heat the pallets for 18 hours creating a mass of molten glass they call “the melt”. To that they add cullet, a term for excess or rejected crystal. The cullet smoothes out the melt. A blower now uses a hollow blowing iron made of tempered stainless steel to collect some of the melt. He constantly rotates the iron so the melt clings together in what is called “a gather”. The blower rolls the gather on a heat resistant table. This sparks a flame because the table is coated with bees wax to prevent the molten crystal from sticking.

The blower exhales a slow steady breath of air to create the base of the piece called “the ball”. After letting it cool for 90 seconds he dips the ball back into the furnace to coat it with another layer of molten crystal. This fortifies the ball. Now he begins shaping the ball using various wooden tools. Tools like “the divider” are used to create grooves so the ball will fit into a mold. He now inserts the ball into a steel mold. Our company has hundreds of these molds for their glassware. The craftsman coated the inside of the mold before hand with a paste of linseed oil and charcoal dust. This prevents the ball from sticking which would cause flaws in the crystal. The blower releases the ball now called “the bowl” using a foot pedal.

After cooling the bowl for one minute, another craftsman called the stemmer adds another gather to create the stem of the glass. He clips the gather with heat resistant scissors. He uses a wooden divider to shape the stem area and a metal divider to stretch the gather into the shape of the stem. The stemmer must be highly skilled. There is no mold or pattern to follow. He relies entirely on eye sight and more than that, on experience, intuition and patience. He cools the stem with layers of wet newspaper. They absorb heat well and don’t leave marks or flaws. Next, another craftsman adds more gather to create the foot of the glass. He uses a wooden tool called “the pitch” to flatten the foot. He also shapes the foot by hand with wet newspaper. Using a metal template insures the craftsman that the foot of the glass has the right dimensions. Everything is handmade so each piece may differ slightly. The piece then goes into an oven at 450 degrees Celsius. At the end of the day they switch off the oven to let the glasses gradually cool over night to room temperature. This process is vital and creates a better quality of glasses. If cooled rapidly the glasses may deform slightly or change the chemical composition by just a bit. But this is enough to not make a perfect glass.

The next day a craftsman uses a settling torch to cut the glass and remove the cap. They use an old record turn table to spin the glass around and make the cut. For precision, they smooth and bevel the rim with a diamond coated steel grinder. Another craftsman called “the cutter” marks out a grid with a water proof pen. He uses another type of turn table to steady his hand as he draws. It’s not an exact pattern, just a general guideline to create the design of the piece. The glass is then moved to a grinder where a design is cut following the pattern of the craftsman’s markings. Water cools, lubricates and cleans the area during the artistic cutting of the pattern. There are two types of cutting: wedge and flat. Wedge cutting creates the deep, intricate cuts. Flat cutting creates smoother, less angled cuts. If he uses a wedge method, this can only be done with diamond tipped wheels. Finally the cutter moves to the foot of the glass and crates artistic cuts which may span for the entire foot of the glass. As a final step an inspector does a detailed, quality check before etching the company logo.

Various other glassware products have similar production processes. Depending on the complexity of that specific glassware our company may use machines to complete several stages. For simple pieces this adds precision, it decreases its purchasing price by a significant amount and it allows delivering the order in a shorter period of time.

You can really set the mood up for Halloween by hand-painting your glassware with traditional Halloween motifs or scary images. Think about it, you’ll only need a few materials and some ordinary clear glasses to turn your home’s décor into a spectacular one! I know what you might be thinking right now, and the answer is no, you don’t need to have any painting skills, that’s why stencils exist!

Pick a glass style you like, but make sure the cup is wide enough to help you really put emphasis on your design. You can hand-paint pumpkins, spiders, bats, ghosts or creepy tree branches, or, if you can’t find any stencils you like and you’re terrible at drawing, you can simply dress the whole glass in orange color and simply paint a scary/grumpy pumpkin face to amuse your guests on Halloween. Oh, and if you make a mistake, wipe away the paint using a Q-tip soaked in alcohol.
Wash your glassware with dish soap and make sure they’re all dried up before painting enamel surface conditioner in a thin layer over the outside of your glasses. You can find this at hardware stores, and you can apply it on the surface of your glassware using a spongy brush. Let it dry, and then paint the image you want on the exterior of your glasses using glass paint and a fine brush. You can get these from craft stores. The trick is to let your hand-painted glasses dry for two days, so make sure you start your DIY project a couple of days before Halloween.

Once they’re fully dry, put the painted glassware into a cool oven, then set the temperature to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Let the glasses in there at 325 degrees, for no less than 10 minutes. Turn off the oven and allow the oven and your glasses to cool down, then take them out and let them breathe a little on the table until they’re fully cooled. Wash the glasses like you normally would, but never put them in the dishwasher. Aaaand you’re done!

One of the main rules of designing logos and images that are to be displayed on small items, such as shot glasses or invitations, is to “Keep It Simple Stupid” or KISS. The smaller the image, the less space there is for a printer to work with, and quality could be sacrificed. A good example typically given is a fingerprint: the lines in the print are relatively close together, and in small resolutions they look connected and all that is seen is a large blob. Overly complex logos not only confuse people and are not memorable, but they take more time to design and may not make a lasting impact on the audience you are trying to pitch it to. However, the most important thing to keep in mind and the golden rule of logo design is... DO NOT USE COMIC SANS. Please don’t.

When can I get it?
This is something that we’ll need to know, which may alter your shipping costs, or even determine whether or not we’ll be able to get it done in time for your deadline.  That’s why we always ask for your “In-Hands Deadline.”  In other words, when you absolutely need these within your hands so you can use them.  We won’t promise delivery of any order to you if we aren’t sure that we can meet your deadline.  If you have a rush order, please call us first so we can determine if it’s possible to print, and any shipping cost that may be attached for rush orders!

4. Sports events
People at sports events might not be as clumsy are kids are, however, in sports events, things are a bit chaotic due to the large amount of people participating.  Everyone’s trying to get autographs or move from one place to another, so plastic or acrylic glassware should replace standard glassware. For large sports events plastic is a better option cost-wise, however, in smaller gatherings such as annual school playoffs, you want a product that can be reused.
